Tesla Roadster 3.0 Package: Changes and Improvements
The automaker has just announced how the new Tesla Roadster will be updated. All the recent speculations about the car’s improved driving range were true. According to Tesla, the Roadster 3.0 package will be an implementation of their experience gained during the Model S development. The package has three key elements which are going to improve the car’s battery capacity, aerodynamics and tires rolling resistance. With all the new features together, the Tesla Roadster 3.0 will have drastically improved driving range.
The Roadster 3.0 package will be launched sometime during spring 2015, but they haven’t specified the exact date yet. Also, they haven’t announced the price of the package.
There are three key features that will improve the electric vehicle. First of all, the upgraded Tesla Roadster will get a 70-kWh battery pack which will be the most substantial improvement that comes with the Roadster 3.0 package. Thanks to the higher capacity of the battery pack, the updated Roadster will be able to store 31 percent more energy. Of course, since they used contemporary lithium-ion technology, the battery pack’s size hasn’t been changed.
Aside from the new higher-capacity battery pack, Tesla has also made other changes which will significantly improve the green car’s performance and efficiency. While the original Roadster has drag coefficient of 0.36, the Roadster 3.0 package will decrease it to 0.31 using a retrofit aero kit. That’s a 15 percent improvement, and it might not seem as a revolutionary upgrade to some, but it’s really, really hard to improve a car’s aerodynamics by 15 percent without exterior redesign.
In the end, the Roadster 3.0 package will replace the current EV’s tires with a new set which has improved rolling resistance coefficient. More precisely, the original tires have 11.0 kg/ton Crr, and the new tires come with 8.9 kg/ton Crr.
All the changes will work together to improve the car’s performance. The most important thing and the biggest news is that the Tesla Roadster with the Roadster 3.0 package will be able to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco with a single charge. Reportedly, the updated Tesla Roadster 3.0 has driving range higher than 400 miles.
This is a really impressive improvement, since the manufacturer’s predictions are that the updated Roadster will have 40-50 percent longer driving range in comparison with the original Roadster.
Roadster 3.0 Coming Early 2015?
As we said, they are going to announce when the Roadsters upgrading will start. Of course, the time frame is known. It will start sometime during spring 2015. Early next year, they will demonstrate the convertible’s driving range in a continuous drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco. They also said that this won’t be the last update which will improve the electric roadster in the future.
