All-New Volkswagen Luxury Model in Development
According to the latest Top Speed report, which relies on the Autobild article (in German), Volkswagen is going to create a BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class competitor. The new luxury car will probably be available as a sedan and a station wagon. Since the only upscale vehicle in the current Volkswagen’s range is the famous Pheaton, which it’s going to come on the American soil soon, the lineup has to be expanded by introducing a new model. The new, currently nameless, sedan is going to sit between the top-notch Pheaton and the more earthbound Passat. The logic of the decision to create an all-new luxury sedan doesn’t have much to do with European market. The new model will target North America and China. Its luxury, performance and exclusivity will be appreciated on those markets. Since the Wolfsburg automaker already knows how to make a high-quality luxury car, they won’t develop the new model from scratch. They will probably use a lot of the engineering solutions and the technology from the Audi A6.
MQB or MLB Platform?
Reportedly, they haven’t decided which platform is going to underpin the new luxury sedan. There are two options – the MQB platform which will support the upcoming redesigned Passat and the MLB platform borrowed from the Audi A6. Having in mind that Volkswagen is going to make a luxury performance vehicle, they will probably go with the Audi’s MLB architecture.
Speculations about Powertrain
As for the powertrain, no one could say anything elaborate about it at the moment. It’s certain that the sedan will be very powerful. Its engine will express the Volkswagen’s determination to make the luxury sedan niche more competitive. Some early speculations claim that the new model could get the Audi 3.0-liter V6 engine which will be paired with the latest DSG transmission. It’s also been rumored that it will have 4Motion all-wheel drive as an option.
When Can We Expect New Volkswagen Luxury Sedan?
The new model will definitely come as a comfortable and luxury four-door sedan, but there’s a chance that they release a sedan release. As for the release, the development of the new Volkswagen model won’t be fast. We could wait several years before they introduce the first concept.
