Attempting to make greener cars, Mazda has been developing bioplastics for years. In order to reduce CO2 emissions and decrease widespread use of petroleum-based materials, they’ve developed the Mazda Biotechmaterial plastics which can be used both inside and outside. It may seem a bit strange, but that’s true. Bioplastics can be used for a cabin, but it can also be used for sculpting a car’s body. Of course, the materials would have to have different characteristics, but the essential technology will be the same. The Mazda Biotechmaterial plastics are heat-resistant high-strength materials which are based on conventional bioplastics. Since biomass is based on plant-derived raw materials, it’s substantially green. The eco-conscious automaker has created bioplastics which will be dyed instead of painted. This way, they will additionally reduce environmental impact of car manufacturing. The first vehicle which will be proud of its green interior materials will be the redesigned 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata.

Technology behind Mazda Biotechmaterial Plastics

As for the production of bioplastics, the technology they use involves fermentation of plants’ sugars and starches which decreases the amount of energy necessary for manufacturing plastic parts by around 30 percent. Moreover, CO2 emissions are lowered thanks to the lightweight characteristics of bioplastics. Future vehicles, which will use bioplastics, will be lighter, so their fuel economy will be improved, thus emitting less CO2 and other pollutants in the atmosphere. Bioplastics are, actually, carbon-neutral materials. This means that the amount of CO2 produced during the process of manufacturing bioplastics is neutralized by photosynthesis of the plants used for their production. This way, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere remains the same.

2016 Mazda Miata MX-5 Will Be the First One to Use Bioplastics

The first vehicle which will have bioplastics will be the new Mazda roadster, of course. Since this is one of the most attractive cars within the automaker’s lineup, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata will be used to promote the new green technology. The redesigned MX-5 roadster will have some interior elements made of Mazda Biotechmaterial plastics, but we have to wait for the first car whose body will be made of bioplastics. The revolutionary material won’t have different characteristics in comparison with currently used materials. Actually, they will probably look better.
