Future Is Here: Jaguar Land Rover Transparent Pillars & Ghost-Car Navigation
Jaguar Land Rover is currently developing the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen system. The advanced technology behind this high-end research project will be used to improve safety in urban environment. Although it may seem like a sci-fi scene, the technology could be implemented in some of the future Jaguar or Land Rover models. Using the Heads-Up Display technology, the system will be able to provide necessary information to the driver without annoying distractions. The automaker’s plan is to put screens on pillars inside the car. The screens will display a live video feed from cameras all around the vehicle, so the driver would have an illusion of pillars transparency. Of course, we don’t expect the technology to cause an effect where occupants would think that the roof hovers. The purpose of the system is enhancing safety and its development will be focused in that direction.
Objects which aren’t visible from the driver’s point of view will be displayed on the screens located on the pillars. Needless to say, the system won’t be engaged all the time. It will, actually, be pretty intuitive and smart, so when the driver wants to overtake, change the lane, or the vehicle approaches a junction, the screens on B- and C-pillars will be activated in order to provide video feed.
Jaguar Land Rover Director of Research and Technology, Dr Wolfgang Epple, said:
“Our ultimate aim is to reduce road accidents and enhance the urban driving experience. The Jaguar Land Rover research team is developing this technology to improve visibility and to give the driver with the right information at the right time. If we can keep the driver’s eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested driving environments.”
The Heads-Up Display will be utilized in more than one way. Aside from the function it will get along with the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen, where it will highlight moving objects, it’s full capacity will be exploited when they pair the 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen with cloud which will provide diverse information for all circumstances.
The new navigation system will be more intuitive thanks to the cloud integration. It will give more precise and human-friendly instructions, using landmarks in addition to the conventional directions with streets and signs.
Since the new Jaguars and Land Rovers will, obviously be loaded with the most advanced technology, the automaker will be able to install the ‘Follow-Me’ Ghost Car navigation system. Instead of giving strict directions, the new navigation system will use the Heads-Up Display where it will create a virtual car in front of the vehicle. All the driver has to do is to follow the ghost car, looking on the road ahead.
