The expansion of the world’s plug-in hybrid market probably motivated the Bavarian automaker to consider improving their vehicle lineup with some plug-in hybrid versions. According to the latest news, BMW is going to offer its “core-brand” models with a hybrid powertrain. This isn’t just good news from an environmentalist’s perspective. It means much more than just a mere lineup enhancement, since this can be considered as a confirmation that BMW has confidence in plug-in hybrid vehicles and their future as everyday cars manufactured for an average Joe.
The first of the “essential” models that will be treated with a hybrid powertrain is going to be the hybrid vehicles will share the components manufactured in the same facility.

Bad news is that we don’t know when we can expect their “highly-electrified” hybrid range. Good news is that they’re working on hybrid powertrains which are going to be able to deliver more than 500 kW (670 horsepower). They won’t disregard performance in favor of other aspects, so their hybrids are expected to come with an amazing all-electric driving range. According to the manufacturer, the capacity of the future cars’ battery packs will be up to 20 kWh, providing up to 62 miles of electric-only driving.

We probably won’t have to wait an eternity to see the first BMW hybrids on the roads. They seem to be eager to release the first models as soon as possible. Having yet another big player in the plug-in hybrid market is certainly a plus. They can bring new technology, more competition and advancement for the whole hybrid market segment. The 2016 BMW 3-Series eDrive Plug-in Hybrid will be released late next year.
