Chevrolet Active Phone Cooling System Explained

Chevrolet is going to be the very first brand that offers vehicles with an integrated smartphone cooling system. According to the automaker, while testing the Chevrolet vehicles with a smartphone wireless charging feature in various climate conditions, they saw that some smartphones would stop charging or simply turn off after only a few minutes.

The reason behind this is clear: smartphones are loaded with heat-sensitive electronics and powered by batteries that are heat-sensitive as well, so their software stops charging or even shuts them off in order to avoid overheating.

The people at General Motors are aware that the most of us use our smartphones when we’re behind the wheel for calls, navigation or entertainment.  That’s why they dedicated time and attention to develop the latest addition to the wireless charging feature.

The Active Phone Cooling system – as they officially named it – is a system that’s connected to the vehicle’s HVAC system. It has an air outlet pointed exactly at the charging bin. Using cool air, the Active Phone Cooling system lowers the smartphone’s temperature while charging. Of course, this works only when the car’s HVAC system is on.

Since we live in modern era that brought sophisticated software solutions, touchscreens, integration and connectivity inside our vehicles, this engineering intervention might look like it’s a bit out of date. And creating a dedicated air vent for a smartphone someone could see as a definition of overkill. But, the truth is there is no better way to cool down a charging smartphone. Utilizing the existing HVAC system, the engineers made yet another simple, but useful feature and displayed the degree of dedication to the minuscule aspects of Chevrolet vehicles.

Dan Lascu, Impala engineer, said:

“Innovation doesn’t mean reinventing the wheel. Sometimes simplicity offers the most elegant solution to a problem.”

The Active Phone Cooling feature will be available on four 2016 models. The 2016 Chevy Volt, Cruze, Malibu, and Impala with wireless charging feature will be the first vehicles with the Active Phone Cooling system integrated.
