Alfa Romeo Range Powered by New Performance Engines — Back to Roots
According to the Automotive News Europe report (subscription required), Alfa Romeo is currently developing new engines which will add power to the current engine range. The automaker’s aim is to reestablish Alfa Romeo as a sporty brand. New engines should improve the brand’s image, but they will also make the new models dynamic and aggressive. It may be strange, but at the moment, the most powerful mill installed in an Alfa Romeo is a turbocharged 1.75-liter four-cylinder which powers the 2015 Alfa Romeo 4C (depicted here). It delivers 237 horsepower and it seems that this is not enough for the automaker’s aspirations, especially when we have in mind their North American plans.
Reportedly, they’re developing engines which will come with significantly larger displacement. They will develop both four-cylinder and V6 configurations and those will be available in diesel and gasoline variants.
The most powerful engine within the new lineup will be a twin-turbo direct-injected V6 mill which is going to deliver 480 horsepower.
Aside from the top-notch engine, there will be two more gasoline options — a turbocharged direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a direct-injected twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 which has been developed from the 3.0-liter V6 Maserati engine. The 2.0-liter mill is going to be rated from 180 hp to 330 hp.
The diesel lineup will have two turbocharged units – a 2.2-liter four-cylinder and a 3.0-liter V6. While the turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder will deliver between 135 hp and 210 hp, the V6 will be more powerful. This engine is actually going to be an improved variant of the current diesel V6 installed in some Jeep and Maserati vehicles. There will be a 275-horsepower version, but there will be a new, more powerful, 340-horsepower unit.
The new engines will be used for the announced expansion of the Alfa Romeo lineup. The first one will be a brand new mid-size sedan whose name hasn’t been disclosed yet. Its performance version will probably have the 480-horsepower V6 engine. The new four-door sedan will be introduced on June 24th, 2015. It’s expected to be released in Europe in the first half of 2016, while the U.S.-spec version will probably be launched by the end of 2016. There will also be a new roadster which will bring additional flair to the new Alfa Romeo range.
