Aggressive Scion iM Concept Announced Production Model
The premiere of the Scion iM Concept was held at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Although this was just a concept, the production model will be introduced at the 2015 New York Auto Show and it will be launched next year, after the debut. Based on the European Toyota Auris, the compact hatchback looks very sporty and appealing. And that was the plan. Since the Auris isn’t distributed on the American soil, the Scion iM will look very fresh and interesting to the American customers. Of course, it won’t be just a rebadged Auris. New styling details and aerodynamic appearance will alter the basic hatchback’s style.
The Scion iM is bold, very aggressive and striking. They said nothing about the car’s powertrain, but the speculations are that the five-door hatchback will be powered by an engine which will be able to deliver more power than the one installed beneath the hood of the Auris. After all, this is a performance car whose exterior has to be justified by, at least, decent performance specs.
Mr. Doug Murtha, Scion Vice President, hinted at the debut of the Scion iM Concept that the production model could cost less than $20,000. Unfortunately, he didn’t say whether they will manage to offer the car with a price tag below twenty grand, but if they do, the Scion iM might be one of the most attractive hatchbacks scheduled for 2015.
Scion iM Exterior Design
The appearance, of course, isn’t all about aggressiveness. From the outside, the car looks like it has just escaped from a race track. Its front fascia has gigantic air intakes, huge for lights and a very muscular front bumper. A couple of creases on the hood, side skirts and pronounced wheel arches contribute to the overall powerful feel. The rear end has a roof spoiler, a really interesting exhaust tip and very unconventional rear bumper. The Scion iM sits atop the set of 19-inch forged alloy wheels which wear performance tires.
Having an aggressive appearance doesn’t mean that the hatchback will be limited when it comes to versatility. Its exterior will be attractive, but the Scion iM will be comfortable and equipped with a lot of gadgets, since the latest technology is something that’s very important to the brand and its customers. At the premiere of the concept, Mr. Murtha said:
“These buyers want something comfortable, technologically advanced, with great features and styling that doesn’t look like everything else on the road.”
Which Engines Might Be Used?
As for the powertrain, it’s hard to estimate which engine will be used for the production model. Fortunately, the Scion iM has a wide range of various engines to choose from. It could inherit a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine from the FR-S or even the Camry’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill which delivers 178 horsepower. The production Scion iM will probably be offered with a six-speed automatic and perhaps an optional six-speed manual transmission.
Scion iM Release and Price
Soon after the 2015 New York Auto Show, where the automaker will unveil the production version, we can expect the first units to start roaming across USA. If the Mr. Murtha’s innuendo means that the Scion iM will start from less than $20,000, this car might be the one that will reaffirm the Scion brand.
