2017 Ford F-150 Raptor: Performance Truck Redefined
The long-awaited Ford F-150 Raptor has been unveiled at the 2015 NAIAS. The off-road iteration of the famous F-150 pickup truck is going to be motivated by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine which will be able to generate more power than the current 6.2-liter V8.
Specifically designed to deliver amazing performance, the all-new Raptor comes with radical changes. Its essentials have been changed, so besides the new engine, it got a new gearbox, a new dual exhaust and numerous other features. It will be released late 2016, as a 2017 model.
Ford Performance director, Dave Pericak, said:
“This all-new F-150 Raptor takes Raptor performance to the next level.”
Ford F-150 Raptor Bodywork
Thanks to the vast use of lightweight materials, the body of the new 2017 F-150 Raptor is more than 500 pounds lighter in comparison with the current Raptor. They used military-grade high-strength forged aluminum alloy. The frame which underpins the Ford F-150 Raptor is made of high-strength steel.
In comparison with the regular F-150, the new 2017 Raptor is six inches wider. Aside from the powerful appearance and confident stance, the fact that the performance truck is wider contributes to the stability in different terrains.
Sitting atop of a set of new 17-inch wheels that wear next-gen BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires, the Ford F-150 Raptor looks really amazing.
“When we created the first Raptor, we set out to prove vehicle performance isn’t just measured on the street or at the track – off-road can be even more fun,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “The original Raptor, plus enhancements on the all-new F-150 set the bar for us to make the all-new Raptor better in every way.”
New Engine and Transmission: EcoBoost Wins
As we already said the new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 will be more powerful than the current 6.2-liter V8. Just as a remainder, the V8 delivers 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque.
They haven’t said how much power the new EcoBoost has, but having in mind that it hides more than 411 in its cylinders, we can conclude that the new F-150 Raptor will be incredibly improved. The new engine will be mated with a new ten-speed automatic transmission.
They’ve also developed an all-new four-wheel-drive, torque-on-demand case.
“The new transfer case offers better traction for a greater variety of terrain at low and high speeds – both on-road and off-road,” said Ford Performance chief engineer, Jamal Hameedi.
The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor comes with an all-new Terrain Management System. This system is used for optimization of the truck’s performance depending on conditions.
Since the people at the Blue Oval know that the Ford F-150 Raptor has to be prepared for any challenge possible, they installed six modes which adjust the truck’s performance.
- Normal mode is used for usual, everyday driving.
- Street mode is used for getting higher performance from the truck but for on-road conditions.
- For high-speed desert performance they developed Baja mode.
- Rock mode is used for careful and slow rock crawling.
- The purpose of Mud and sand mode is to get the best out of the F-150 Raptor on muddy and sandy terrains.
- In the end, Weather mode has been crafted for snow, ice and rain.
Aggressive from the outside, the 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor shows is rough side to the rest of the world, while the interior comes as a comfortable and cozy shelter for the occupants.
