2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country Coming to 2015 NAIAS
After the Los Angeles premiere of the V60 Cross Country, the Swedish automaker will introduce yet another model with the words Cross Country in its name. At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, they will introduce the 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country. This unusual amalgam of a sedan and a crossover is probably going to cause different reactions, but there’s no doubt Volvo is the first in the completely new market niche.
The 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country is, virtually, a sedan with all-wheel drive, large wheels and off-road ground clearance. In comparison with the S60 sedan, the Cross Country’s clearance is 2.5 inches (65 mm) higher. It’s clear that the new model has been developed following the same principles as the V60 Cross Country.
What’s Different about 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country?
Using the Cross Country wagons as a paragon, Volvo has made the S60 Cross Country with the same all-wheel drive and suspension. Since the car’s large 18-inch wheels (19-inch set is available) will probably come off the road sometimes, the 2016 S60 Cross Country got underbody cladding for protection. The wheels wear high profile tires in order to reduce noise, provide comfort and necessary protection.
The automaker said that the European version will get a front-wheel drive option. The U.S.-spec model will come with all-wheel drive only.
So, what do they want with this extraordinary car? Well, they’re pretty bold and they will try to establish an all-new market niche of sedan crossovers.
Lex Kerssemakers, Volvo Cars’ Senior Vice President Product Strategy and Vehicle Line Management, said:
“We want to further explore the market with our Cross Country brand. We did this back in 1997 with the V70 Cross Country and it led to the birth of a whole new segment. We have included all the capability-driven benefits of the Cross Country brand in this new model, while offering a completely unique expression of adventure and all-road readiness in a distinctly sporty and stylish package.”
Powertrain: Five-Cylinder Engine and Six-Speed Gearbox
As for the powertrain, the U.S.-spec 2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country comes with a 2.5-liter T5 inline-five engine which generates 250 horsepower. The mill is probably going to be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
After the first models with the single powertrain start roaming across the continent, they are probably going to work on the engine lineup enhancement. We can expect new Drive-E engines as well as an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
2016 Volvo S60 Cross Country Release
After the 2015 NAIAS premiere, those who fall in love with the sedan crossover pioneer will have to wait until early summer when the orders will be open.
