2016 Scion iM & 2016 Scion iA Details: MSRP, Fuel Economy & Features
The Japanese automaker announced the pricing of its two models – the 2016 Scion iM and 2016 Scion iA. Both of those models are, hopefully, a way to recreate the brand’s chic and popularity. Those cars will hit the showrooms on September 1.
As for the price, the 2016 Scion iM with a manual gearbox starts at $18,460, while the same car with a CVTi-S has a base price of $19,200. Although we expected higher price, the 2016 Scion iA, the first Scion sedan ever, has the base MSRP set at $15,700. This price tag is for a version with a six-speed manual transmission. The 2016 iA with a a six-speed automatic costs $16,800. These prices don’t include a $795 handling and delivery fee.
Additional $795 is all you can expect to be added to the car’s price, since the brand has the Scion Pure Price policy that eliminates exhausting negotiations and hidden salesman tricks. The price that’s displayed at the dealership is the price you pay. This may or may not differ from the MSRP, but at least you know exactly how much the car costs.
2016 Scion iM Hatchback: Eristic Design
The 2016 Scion iM is a based on the Toyota Auris, a hatchback that’s distributed overseas. This turn towards more conventional design language met a pretty divided critique. While some say that this is the way to revive the brand’s popularity, the others claim that a Scion without its unique design isn’t a Scion.
The 2016 iM has everything one cool urban hatchback needs. It is true, though, that the American incarnation of the Euro-spec Auris might not be the best successor of the brand’s unconventional design heritage, but if there was no such car as the Toyota Auris, if the iM was a completely new car that came straight from the drawing board, the public would probably perceive it with great enthusiasm. The hatchback borrowed some of the styling cues from the Scion FR-S, so it looks aggressive and sportier than expected.
The 2016 Scion iM is offered in six striking colors: Electric Strom Blue, Blizzard Pearl, Barcelona Red Metallic, Spring Green Metallic, Classic Silver Metallic and Black Sand Pearl.
2016 Scion iM Engine, Transmission and EPA Fuel Economy
As for the powertrain, the 2016 Scion iM is motivated by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 137 horsepower. With this engine under the hood and the six-speed manual transmission, the 2016 iM has EPA fuel economy of 27 mpg/city, 36 mpg/highway and 31 mpg/combined. With the continuously variable CVTi-S, the hatchback returns 28 mpg/city, 37 mph/highway and 32 mpg/combined.
The 2016 Scion iM is affordable, but it doesn’t mean that doesn’t have much to offer. Actually, its features list is pretty impressive. It has a rearview camera, a steering wheel wrapped in real leather, dual-zone automatic A/C control, Hill Start Assist, seven-inch Pioneer Display Audio with standard HD Radio and Aha, a 4.2-inch color TFT multi-information display, color-keyed heated power folding side mirrors etc.
2016 Scion iA Body Design
The 2016 Scion iA is special by the mere fact that it’s the very first sedan with a Scion badge on the grille. Its sporty design elements express the sedan’s dynamic character, but the iA is far from being a sport’s car. In fact, the 2016 iA is a perfect blend of the brand’s interesting design, several sophisticated details and versatility. It is an entry-level sedan, but its appearance and style are what makes it stand out. At first glance, this car looks like it can last for years with minor maintenance cost. However, we’ll know more about it once the first models leave the showrooms.
The sedan is offered in seven body colors: Stealth Black, Graphite, Abyss, Pulse, Sapphire, Sterling and Frost.
Powertrain and EPA Fuel Economy
Under the hood, they installed a 1.5-liter engine that generates 106 horsepower. When you see this kind of displacement and power output, it guarantees amazing fuel efficiency. The automaker published the sedan’s EPA fuel economy ratings. According to them, the 2016 Scion iA with the automatic transmission returns 33 mpg/city, 42 mpg/highway and 37 mpg/combined. With the manual gearbox, the figures are slightly different: 31 mpg/city, 41 mpg/highway and 35 mpg/combined.
2016 Scion iA Features
Although it’s an entry-level sedan whose primary aim is to be affordable, the 2016 iA offers a very interesting list of standard features. It has keyless entry with push-button start, rearview camera, seven-inch touchscreen multimedia system with voice recognition, power side mirrors, tilt-telescopic steering wheel and low-speed pre-collision system.
