New 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Unveiled and Coming to USA
The next-generation Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has been introduced in Korea. The U.S.-spec version will be unveiled at the upcoming hybrid setup. Thanks to the new powertrain, the redesigned Sonata Hybrid will have significantly improved efficiency. Of course, they can’t say anything about EPA fuel economy at the moment, but the sedan’s efficiency can be estimated using the Korean-cycle figures. The new engine is a really big improvement, but the automaker has made many other changes. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is now equipped with an improved six-speed automatic gearbox. Based on this version, the all-new Sonata Plug-in Hybrid will probably hit the market by the end of 2015 in order to complete the Hyundai’s green car lineup.
Exterior Design Changes Aren’t Just a Matter of Style
The new exterior design is as avant-garde as it was expected. The car looks appealing, of course, but it seems that they decided not to use futuristic design to stress that inside the sedan is a new hybrid powertrain. Some exterior changes, mostly at the front fascia, were made in order to decrease the car’s drag coefficient and to improve the cooling, so the new Sonata Hybrid will have even better performance and fuel economy. The new styling details are handsome and very appealing.
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid doesn’t have an inferiority complex. Its bodywork is highly-stylized, assertive and elegant. It comes with a pretty mash grille, aggressive front bumper and air intakes, as well as new attractive headlights. The car comes with standard HID headlights and LED daytime running lights. The redesigned Sonata Hybrid is robust, but it also has a note of elegance thanks to the slope of its roofline and conventional rear end. At the premiere, Mr. Jin Kwak, Hyundai Motor’s Executive Vice President, said:
“The launch of our all-new Sonata Hybrid, with its class-leading fuel economy and powerful driving performance, comes at a time when eco-friendly vehicles are becoming established as a mainstream car.”
2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Powertrain Specs
Although the redesigned exterior improves the new generation’s aerodynamics, the orthocenter of the car’s fuel economy improvements is under the hood. The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has a direct-injected 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine which delivers 154 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of twist. It’s paired with a 38-kW electric motor in order to provide great fuel economy. The lithium-polymer battery pack has capacity of 1.62 kWh and it’s nested under the trunk floor.
2016 Sonata Hybrid Comes with Improved Efficiency — EPA Fuel Economy Ratings Estimate
We have to wait for the official EPA fuel economy ratings, but according to the results the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid made at the Korean-cycle test, we can estimate that it will be around 43 mpg combined.
2015 NAIAS Premiere and Release Date
The 2016 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid will be introduced to the American customers this January at the 2015 NAIAS and it’s expected to be released sometime during spring 2015.
