2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang — Performance Muscle Car
At the 2015 NAIAS, the Blue Oval had yet another attractive premiere. The 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang is a performance version of the regular GT350. Since the all-new Ford GT sits at the top of the Ford Performance food chain, the GT350R Mustang might not look that attractive when it’s placed next to the thoroughbred racer. But, if you take a good look, you’ll see a true gem of the Ford lineup.
When they introduced the regular GT350 at the last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, lots of people were excited. When the first rumors about the GT350R started, a lot of us were skeptical, because that would be too good to be true.
And here it is! The 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang, “the most track-ready road-going production Mustang ever built”, as the automaker said.
2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang Comes with Powerful V8 Engine
First things first: beneath the hood of the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang, they nested a new 5.2-liter dual-overhead-cam V8 engine. This naturally aspirated beast is the Ford’s very first production engine with a flat-plane crankshaft manufactured.
Since this mill is the most powerful naturally aspirated engine Ford has ever produced, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be something special. According to the preliminary automaker’s specs, the V8 delivers more than 500 horsepower and more than 400 lb-ft of twist.
Performance Model Bodywork
Everyone could see the difference between the regular GT350 and the GT350R at first glance. The performance model’s exterior is noticeably different. Although those two have the same bodywork, there are some not-so-subtle details which clearly state that the GT350R Mustang is something different.
Due to the fact that they had a plan to create a lightweight muscle car, the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang has lost some unnecessary pounds. There are numerous weight-saving changes, but the most obvious one is the most fundamental. They used carbon-fiber wheels, and thanks to those wheels, the performance Shelby Mustang is expected to have significantly better specs.
Those 19-inch wheels (front are 11 inches wide, rear are 11.5 inches wide) made of carbon-fiber are 13 pounds lighter in comparison with standard alloys. Those are also stronger. The wheels wear high-performance Michelin PilotSportCup 2 tires.
The splitter and the rear wing at the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang aren’t just handsome details. Those actually create downforce to improve the car’s performance.
2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Price and Release
They haven’t specified the pricing yet, but according to some early estimations, the 2016 Ford Shelby GT350R Mustang might not be as expensive as it was expected. Although the latest rumors aren’t the most reliable source of information, there’s actually a pretty big chance that the 2016 Shelby GT350R Mustang comes with a pretty competitive price tag, somewhere in the range of its rivals.
The performance muscle car will be released sometime this year in the U.S. and Canada.
