2016 Chevy Volt Specs & Details: Is next-Gen Volt That Amazing?
After all those teasers and leaked information, General Motors has introduced the 2016 Chevy Volt at the 2015 NAIAS alongside of the surprising Bolt concept. Coming with a new Voltec powertrain, the Bow Tie’s plug-in hybrid has improved its performance and driving range.
Of course, the next-gen Volt isn’t all about extended driving range, though this is a very significant – if not the most significant – aspect of every green car today. The redesign brought a new, boldly revised approach, making the 2016 Volt a really attractive compact hatchback, and a number of other changes that wait to be revealed. This car is trying to amaze us in a subtle way. Let’s discover is it good enough.
2016 Chevy Volt Exterior Redesign
Looking at the car’s body, you get an impression that the new generation is everything the Volt needed. It finally got a sleeker style which reveals the car’s athleticism and sporty ambitions. It’s obvious that the 2016 Chevy Volt got an elaborate redesign, but it’s also easy to see that they managed to redesign it without departing from its recognizable design cues.
The interior of the 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been redesigned, too. General Motors came up with an idea to bring a bit of luxury in an affordable electric-hybrid. While caring about ambient lighting and controls, they improved the car’s interior without changing its identity – exactly as they did with the exterior.
The instrument cluster has an eight-inch screen with dual digital color displays. At the center stack, you can find an eight-inch touchscreen for the Chevrolet MyLink system.
New Battery Provides Great Possibilities
Powered by the new Voltec system, the 2016 Volt got a substantial improvement. The new system has an 18.4-kWh lithium-ion battery with altered cell chemistry. The battery manufacturer is the same as before – LG Chem. As we previously wrote in a detailed article announcing the new powertrain, the battery pack can store more energy in spite of the fact that they have decreased the number of the cells from 288 to 192.
This results in 21-pound weight loss, 20 percent higher capacity and better performance, since it’s now positioned lower.
“The improvements in the efficiency and performance of the 2016 Volt are driven by what owners said they wanted in the next-generation model: more range, better fuel economy and stronger acceleration,” said Andrew Farah, vehicle chief engineer. “Building on General Motors’ industry leading battery and drive-unit technologies, we’ve delivered all of that, while also making the Volt more refined and fun to drive.”
2016 Chevy Volt Powertrain Improved – Let the Numbers Do the Talking
The two-motor Voltec drive unit has better specs, too. According to the automaker, it’s up to 12 percent more efficient. It also suffered a weight reduction treatment and it’s 100 pounds lighter in comparison with the current system. The electric drive has motoring power of 149 hp, generating power rated at 45 hp, and 294 lb-ft of torque.
Since both of the electric motors can be used, the car’s performance has been noticeably improved. General Motors said that the new Volt’s electric acceleration time from a standstill to 30 is 2.6 seconds, which is a 19 percent increase. Zero-to-sixty acceleration time is 8.4 and that’s a 7 percent increase.
As for the range-extending engine, it’s a direct-injected 1.5-liter Ecotec inline-four. It delivers 101 horsepower.
One of the most attractive features of the next-gen Chevrolet Volt is the new Regen on Demand system. The Volt finally got a regenerative braking system.
2016 Chevrolet Volt Specs – Driving Range, Fuel Economy and Top Speed
The Volt’s top speed is 98 mph, but that’s not the most important spec of a green car. What’s more important is its driving range and the 2016 Chevy Volt, as GM said, has EV range of 50 miles combined. With fully charged battery and a full tank of regular unleaded, it can travel 420 miles, according to the automaker’s estimation.
Its fuel economy is remarkable: 41 mpg / 102 mpg-e. Those are the GM’s estimations.
The 2016 Chevy Volt comes with four driving modes:
- Normal – made for everyday use, this mode emphasizes the car’s efficiency
- Sport – made for better more dynamic acceleration
- Mountain – made for delivering optimal performance in steep-terrain adventures
- Hold – made for long-distance rides on highways, this is an extended-range mode
Charging New Battery
The 2016 Chevrolet Volt comes with a new 120V portable cord which is now stored on the left side of the car’s trunk.
There’s a new system that indicates charging status by different tones. A specifically designed charge status indicator, located on the top of the instrument panel, will disclose charging status using a series of flashes.
In order to fully charge the battery, you have to wait approximately 13 hours with 120V and 12 amps. When connected to the 240V power source, the Volt’s battery can be charged in about 4.5 hours.
Standard and Optional Safety Systems
The new 2016 Chevy Volt comes with a standard rear-view camera and ten air bags. There are some safety features available: rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning with following distance indicator, front automatic braking, side blind zone alert with lane change alert and lane keep assist with lane departure warning. There’s also a park assist system which can help you in parallel parking maneuvers.
2016 Chevy Volt Release
The 2016 Chevy Volt will be released in the second half of the year.
