2016 Chevy Camaro Teased Ahead of Premiere

The 2016 Chevy Camaro comes with drastically better aerodynamics. According to the automaker’s Exterior Design manager, Kirk Bennion, they tested hundreds of changes in order to achieve perfection. The 2016 Camaro will, therefore, look somewhat different.

The teaser photo reveals more aggressive, sharper exterior design that’s focused on performance. But those sharp lines complete the inherited exterior design. The new Camaro will show its DNA and its rich history, but the new design solutions will significantly contribute to the overall style.

The automaker said that the 2016 Chevy Camaro spent 350 hours in wind-tunnel testing. Sometimes the pony car was in the wind tunnel for 24 hours a day. And those diligent tests will result in aerodynamics that’s never seen before.

Mr. Kirk Bennion said:

“The importance of aerodynamics increases exponentially as we increase vehicle performance. As engine output increases, we need more engine cooling. As acceleration and top speeds climb, we need to reduce lift for better high-speed stability. However, we cannot make any changes at the expense of increasing drag, which can hurt fuel economy. To balance these different aerodynamic targets, we tested literally hundreds of changes on the new Camaro, millimeters at a time.”

Although the original design of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro included lower grille bars oriented at 20 degrees. But those tests helped them to reach the conclusion that the most ideal angle is almost half the original. So, they set the bars to 13 degrees. The design remained unchanged, but the engine got one percent more airflow for necessary cooling.

The 2016 Chevy Camaro also got an interesting aerodynamic lift reduction. Instead of front air dam, the 2016 Camaro got a flush belly pan that goes from the grille all the way to the center of the muscle car. The automaker said that the underbody, “paired with small ‘spats’ forward of the front tires”, reduces total lift by 30 percent while reducing aerodynamic drag.

The 2016 Chevy Camaro will be introduced on May 16, at Detroit’s Belle Isle Park and then it goes on lots of different events all around the USA, such as the Indianapolis 500.
