2015 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop Sports Hatch Revealed
The new 2015 Mini John Cooper Works has been revealed before the premiere which is scheduled for the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. At the same place last year, the automaker introduced the JCW concept which was used as a model for the upcoming production version. The 2015 John Cooper Works Hardtop is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill borrowed from the Mini Cooper S Hardtop. However, the JCW’s version has slightly boosted power output, enough to become the most powerful mill ever installed under the hood of a production Mini.
Since the new John Cooper Works is performance oriented, it had to be equipped with performance features. Huge wheels and Brembo brakes reveal that the hatchback has sporty aspirations. Its impressive performance will prove that the automaker was determined to deliver an unprecedented model of the famous hatch.
Revealed Exterior of 2015 Mini John Cooper Works
Although the brand’s recognizable design language won’t be abandoned, the JWC’s style will look different. The car’s exterior has been adjusted due to the performance requirements.
Looking from the outside, the performance hatchback has various details which disclose that the 2015 JWC is essentially a sports car trapped in a body of a handsome urban hatchback. Large air inlets and a honeycomb mash hexagonal grille are the most prominent design elements of the car’s front fascia.
The aerodynamics improvements subtly suggest that there’s something special about this car whose rear end has a rear diffuser and a roof-mounted spoiler. The 2015 Mini John Cooper Works Hardtop comes with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, while other wheel designs are optional. It can even sit atop of a set of 18-inch John Cooper Works Cup Spoke light alloy wheels.
The interior will continue the performance leitmotif established outside. The 2015 John Cooper Works Hardtop has new sports seats with integrated headrests. Optionally, the seats can be wrapped in leather instead of the Carbon Black fabric.
Opposite to the seats, the standard steering wheel with mounted controls will be wrapped in leather. With dominant Piano Black and red accents, the car’s sporty orientation will be additionally highlighted.
2015 Mini John Cooper Works Performance Specs
As we already said, the 2015 Mini John Cooper Works will be powered by the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. It delivers 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque.
Thanks to this engine, the hatchback will accelerate to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds with an automatic transmission. When the engine is paired with a manual transmission, the 2015 JCW accelerates to 60 in 6.1 seconds. The car’s top speed is 153 mph.
As for the available transmission options, there’s the standard six-speed manual and the optional shiftable six-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The transmissions deliver the engine’s power to the front wheels.
Using the three driving modes, the car’s performance can be adjusted to suit particular needs. Aside the standard MID mode, there’s the Sport mode, which makes the JCW Hardtop more performance oriented, and there’s the Green mode, which is focused on efficiency.
Premiere and Release
The sports hatchback will probably be launched shortly after the premiere at the 2015 NAIAS this January. The price hasn’t been disclosed yet.
